Cornea & External Disease

This field of specialization encompasses all disorders of the cornea, sclera, conjunctiva and eyelids. Each Wheaton Eye Clinic doctor in this subspecialty is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has completed specialized fellowship training in cornea & external disease. Services include consulting, state-of-the-art diagnostics and the full range of medical and surgical treatments.

The cornea is the transparent tissue that covers the front of the eye. The sclera is the thick, white “wall” of the eye and the conjunctiva is the thin tissue that covers and protects the sclera. The eyelids function to protect these surface structures of the eye and to keep them moist with each blink.

There are several disorders that can affect all of these structures including infections, degenerations, and dystrophies as well as trauma. There are inherited diseases of the cornea and also degenerative problems.
